Computer Desk Variants

Pretty much finished texturing my desk now, Ive included some variants here to see what you all think, should I just chose one colour or have duplicate desks with two different colours for other rooms?
The top left and bottom left show the difference between the subtle dirt and worn effect I have made. Theres no specular on this so the metal looks pretty drab, im not too sure on how to make this metallic if anyone could advise.

I've also repositioned the handle on the cabinet as it didn't make sense previously.
Hope you like! Cheers!

  1. nice one man, im liking the dirty one the most, the others look brand new. maybe add even more dirt, stains and marks. not sure about the metal, maybe have a look at some unreal shaders :)

  2. Cheers man, yeah this really needs to be decided as to how much grunge/dirt are going to be on the assets. I like the concept of a killer being clean and tidy and like Jolyon says 'he sick of seeing bloodstained bathrooms' but at the same time the brief is a survival horror, and walking around a clean place isn't exactly scary. I think we've gone down the Thriller path rather than gorey horror. Needs deciding really.

  3. agree with arron :) our concept is cool, and i think we should leave adding mess till later when we have a better idea of the area.

personally, i love dark wood, but i think the beechwood works better with the silver.

Also, think of the materials - if its a proper wooden desk, you wouldnt buy expencive wood for a lab or work area desk, so mahogany would be a bit much :P Pine seems very common.
If its chipboard in a plastic coat i guess any effect would be okay, but it will have to be made a bit shiny in the specular map. Kinda like the work desks in the labs in uni. Are they plywood in a plastic coat? Anyways, it may be something to consider :)

  4. Yeah I was going for the coat effect on chipboard/mdf. It meant I could get away with bad seams on the the corners as they tend to be in RL :D Im not too sure on how to apply shaders in UDK atm, need to look into it. Cheers Sai
